Atlanta Hawks power forward Mouhamed Gueye hailed Trae Young as a “legend” after it emerged the four-time All-Star was set to be traded to the Washington Wizards.

Young will move to the capital after seven years in Atlanta in exchange for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert. It’s a move that serves both franchises, providing the Hawks with financial manoeuvrability – especially as they continue to seek a deal for Dallas star Anthony Davis – while Washington get the experienced head they need to help develop an exciting crop of young players.

The 27-year-old has $95million left on his Atlanta deal that runs until the end of the 2026-27 season.

Snyder coy on Young talk

Asked about Young following the 117-100 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night, coach Quin Snyder was coy, saying: “I know you all have questions for me that right now I’m not at liberty to talk about or answer.”

Gueye was more forthcoming. He said: “That’s T.Y. That’s Trae Young. When I first got here, he was one of the first guys that texted me, welcoming me to the city, gave me a lot of advice. Obviously, playing with Trae, as a big, is like a dream come true. I love him as a guy, I love him as a teammate. … An Atlanta legend.”

Young will leave Georgia as Atlanta’s all-time leader in 3-pointers (1,295) and assists (4,837). He has struggled with injuries this season, though, playing in just 10 games, averaging 19.3 points, 8.9 assists and 1.5 rebounds.

He did not play against the Pelicans due to a right quad contusion that has kept him out for six games.
